Moral Difficulties Abound for ACVOW
Doubts have developed regarding a San Diego non-profit service called the American Combat Veterans of War or ACVOW. The organization has an an office at the Va clinic in La Jolla, CA and is managed almost completely by volunteers. They claim to help veterans secure their benefits and boast about their training to assist warriors with Ptsd. The problem? No accountability. The staff has been around for over 10 years, though operates under the radar. A check on Charity Navigator as well as the Better Business Bureau’s Charity Index make completely no mention of ACVOW. Nor does ACVOW possess extensive record of the results they’ve obtained supporting veterans and active duty personnel. Moreover, ACVOW just lost a small claims court conflict for refusing to pay one of its contractors. A Utah News article from June of last year implies that one of ACVOW’s officials used funds from the organization to bail out an anti-immigration activist from jail, an apparent violation of the terms for most 501(c)(3) non-profit establishments. This post is not necessarily proposing that ACVOW is undertaking in unlawful action. There are undoubtedly severe moral concerns and possible donors need to be cautious when donating to institutions devoid of financial accountability.
